LEARN how to register your work with the Electronic Copyright Office!
Whether you create art for fun, for profit, or both, it is always advisable to register for copyright protection for your work. Rights to your own original designs remain protected, and you will be prepared if anyone alleges that you violated someone’s intellectual property rights. As an artist it is important for you to know your rights, exercise your rights, and protect your rights.
Copyright for Artists is over 30 pages long. It contains specific information for artists about how to protect their arts and crafts. This guide explains how to register for United States copyright registration of various types of visual art, such as advertisements, drawings, paintings, jewelry designs, needlework, original prints, sewing patterns, posters, sculpture, and weaving designs. Copyright for Artists does not apply to non-U.S. works, musical works (like songs), or literary works (like books).
The content in this guide is based on the rules and regulations found at www.copyright.gov, but the essential copyright information you’ll find here is laid out in an easy-to-understand manner that’s specifically tailored to the Etsy community.
Copyright for Artists contains:
1. Clear, easy to follow, copyright information.
2. Step-by-step instructions for acquiring copyright protection with the U.S. Copyright Office.
3. Information about other intellectual property protection like trademark law, patent law, trade secret law, and contract law.
4. Answers to frequently asked questions, inspired by Etsy threads.
5. Fun and useful visuals.
6. Helpful and easy to read charts.
U.S. copyright registration requires one form, one fee, and zero attorneys. You may also be able to register a group of works with one form and one fee. There are many online services that will charge you a fee for copyright registration, but with Copyright for Artists you do not have to go through such a service.
I am a licensed attorney in New York State. I’m also an entrepreneur and a jeweler, so I understand the concerns that are specific to artists.
You can receive Copyright for Artists via email in PDF form, usually within three days of payment (most likely sooner than that). You will need Adobe Reader to view the PDF; download the program for free at www.adobe.com.
I ask that you please respect my copyrights and refrain from distributing, copying, or otherwise forwarding on this guide without permission.
